Oomycetes are a diverse group of filamentous eukaryotic microorganisms found in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. Although their filamentous growth often resembles that of fungi, oomycetes belong to the stramenopiles and are evolutionarily distant from true fungi.

Oomycete biology

Oomycetes display remarkable diversity in their lifestyles and ecological roles. They include saprophytes, parasites of plants and animals, and numerous species associated with aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Among the best-known oomycetes are species of Phytophthora, Pythium, downy mildews and water moulds. Several are responsible for destructive diseases of crops and natural ecosystems.

Oomycete plant pathogens

Plant-pathogenic oomycetes have major agricultural and ecological importance. Species such as Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of potato late blight, and numerous other Phytophthora species infect crops, forests and natural plant communities worldwide.

Their biology combines rapid growth, sophisticated host interactions and complex developmental transitions, making oomycetes important models for studying both microbial cell biology and plant–microbe interactions.

Molecular genetics and genomics

Modern oomycete research encompasses genomics, genetics, gene regulation, cell biology, evolution, population biology and host–pathogen interactions.

Genomic sequencing and functional approaches have revealed rapidly evolving effector repertoires, specialised secretion systems and signalling pathways that contribute to development and pathogenicity.

Genome editing, live-cell imaging, transcriptomics, proteomics and computational biology are increasingly expanding the experimental toolbox available to the field.

The Oomycete Molecular Genetics Network (OMGN) brings together researchers working across these areas of oomycete biology, fostering scientific exchange, methodological innovation, international collaboration and support for early-career researchers.
